Get this music out of my head!

Ever since I could remember there’s been music in my head. My mom used to think it was just something I picked up from the TV or radio because I was apparently always walking around the house humming or singing to myself. As I got older I realized two things: 1) the music in my head was original and 2) most of it sucked. I mean, I thought it was catchy but it was just a little melody, some lyrics, and nothing more. It wasn’t until my mom forced me to play piano at age seven that I learned how to take the melody out on my head and make it accessible to others. After years of piano lessons and who knows how much money, it turned out I was not a very good piano player, probably due to the fact that I never wanted to practice. However, I am thankful that I learned how to read and write music; otherwise I think I might have gone insane. I’m not sure if you can learn to create original music in your head. I’m pretty sure you’re just born with it.

After I decided to make music my career, I realized the first thing I would need to do was to translate the music in my head into music people could hear. Now if you’re already a musician, all you need is a way to record. (I’ll cover that later) To those of you, who do not know anything about music and want to write a hit song and become rich and famous, please pay attention. LEARN SOMETHING ABOUT MUSIC! Music is a language and if you don’t learn the language and you just start talking gibberish, no one will understand you. Music provides a means for people to communicate messages and express themselves. A great way to learn about music is to actually take the time to listen to great music and try to understand what it is about that song that makes it so great. Usually if you listen enough you will start to hear patterns.

Lesson 1: Every Song usually has 3 Components:

Melody: is the “horizontal” component, the theme, line, or group of phrases in the foreground of a song.

Harmony: is a “vertical” component, the combinations or “voicings” of notes together that resonate as a tone or feeling.

Rhythm: is the tempo, the timing, or the beat.

So you wanna be a music superstar, big house, nice car…

I remember watching MTV alone in my living room and thinking, if only someone would give me a chance, I could be the next big thing, a record company’s dream! Unfortunately at the time I was the greatest unknown songwriter/artist/musician/singer/producer/rapper in the world. I was a musical genius who could create music on my computer in just a few hours that sounded better than any hit song on the billboard charts. All I needed was some industry executive to knock on my door, beg me to play my amazing music, tell me where to sign and I would be bigger than Michael Jackson (well before Michael had to up and move to Dubai) Just thinking about all the ground-breaking music sitting on my computer in my parents study which would no doubt undeniably change the lives of people for generations to come was killing me.

It was only years later I realized how truly naïve I really was. My brothers tried to tell me I was delusional but what did they know? I was the greatest songwriter/artist/musician/singer/producer/rapper of my generation. If you are reading this and thinking “this guy sounds just like me,” please subscribe to this blog immediately.

The music business, like any other business is complex and constantly changing. In order to become successful you must listen, learn, and adapt.

You believe that if you keep playing your music on myspace so the counter goes to 1 million plays, you'll get signed.
You believe that if you just made a music video and put it on youtube you'd be signed...
You actually believe the jewelry in the videos are owned by the artists in the videos...
You MC name is explicit...
You're constantly angry because known artists keep on "biting your shit" by stealing your ideas...
You got it all planned out, hit song, get signed, music video, radio airplay, money...
